MIRI: Preserving the environment for future generations starts with a clear understanding of the (environment) issue.

According to Sarawak Shell Bhd’s head of Corporate Affairs, Frank Saing, the best way to achieve this was by learning about the environment in schools from a very young age.

He said this when opening the ‘Sarawak Environmental Education Practitioners: Train The Trainers’ workshop for teachers in Kuching recently. The workshop was sponsored by SSB in collaboration with Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB) and state Education Department.

He said the workshop highlighted the importance of environmental education as well as smart partnership between schools, the community, non-government organisations, public and the private sectors.

“Thank you for allowing Shell to be a part of this, to enhance greater understanding about the environmental, environmental education and activities,” he said.

He added that Shell, under its Corporate Social Responsibility programme with various parties had conducted numerous early environmental education initiatives.

“For instance, in northern Sarawak, Shell together with Jawatankuasa Kem Mesra Alam (KMA), has organised environmental camps for students and teachers for many years now.

“In the first half of this year, Shell co-organised similar environment education with the state Department of Environment, Bengkel Sekolah Lestari for teachers in Sibu in June, and the most recent one – Kem Mesra Alam nature camp – in Limbang in the middle of last month.

“Also, Shell together with several government agencies in Sarawak and Sabah, have co-organised the Serasi Award or Anugerah Sekolah Rakan Alam Sekitar.”

Touching on the recent workshop, he said the objective was to strengthen the existing mechanism, collaboration and network amongst the Environmental Education (EE) stakeholders in the state.

It was attended by 40 people from various government agencies.
