KOTA KINABALU: The Health Ministry will monitor the condition of Queen Elizabeth Hospital II (QEH II) in Luyang from time to time after the upgrading project was completed last month.

Minister Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai said the contractor had done a very good job for completing the project nine months ahead of schedule even though there were patients in the hospital during the upgrading process.

“I have been briefed by the State Health Department that all the works had been implemented and it was approved by JKR (Public Works Department) and the consultant.

“For example, the car park area, the certificate of occupancy has been issued by DBKK (Kota Kinabalu City Hall). We will make sure if there is any problem, it will be overcome as soon as possible,” he said.

Liow added the complaint about the crack in the car park area had been monitored and it had been repaired.

He said he was proud with the work of the contractor who completed the renovation of seventh to ninth floors in nine months without giving trouble and affecting the patients.

What is most important, he said, is Sabah will be having its own Catheterization Laboratory (Cath Lab) and Cardiothoracic Services after the completion of the hospital.

Luyang assemblywoman Melanie Chia recently expressed concerns over the safety of the newly built five-storey car park at the hospital.

She said she had received complaints from the public regarding the safety of the building and carried out an inspection with Sabah Progressive Party leaders.

She said cracks were evident, especially on the upper floors of the multi-storey car park.
