KUCHING: Maria Cake House is basking in the glory of being the only non-Muslim ‘kek lapis’ specialist in the state with a halal-certification.

But the icing on the cake is that it had never used the swine DNA-tainted ‘Golden Churn Creamery Butter’ to make the famous cake.

Its proprietress Maria Ngui Sai Moi, who started Maria Cake House at
Jalan Bishopgate in Main Bazaar in 2003, said her bakery received the halal certification from the state Islamic Department (JAIS) early this year.

“Many people initially had doubts about our ‘kek lapis’ as most producers were Muslims.

“The fact is we never used ‘Golden Churn Creamery Butter’ …we only use the ‘Anchor’ brand since day one,” said Maria to reporters at her shop yesterday.

She said to overcome the negative public perception, she decided a long time ago to pursue getting the halal certification.

“I finally managed to get it in January this year,” enthused Maria.

Maria revealed that her ‘kek lapis’ making skills were family inherited and the products were reasonably priced.

“When the issue about ‘Golden Churn Creamery Butter’ arose I was confident of answering queries from my customers as I am not using the product.”

Maria Cake House presently has four Muslims in its payroll.
