LIMBANG: Bukit Kota assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail said the Jalur Gemilang is not only the pride of the nation but it also reflects the people’s love and patriotism for the country.

As the national flag is a very important symbol to a nation, all countries in the world had their own national flags which were highly respected by their citizens, he said when welcoming members of the `Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang Ramadhan (KMJGR) 2011’ convoy which arrived here from Miri Saturday evening.

The ceremony was held at Surau Al-Raudhah, Taman Desa, Pabahanan, near here.

Abdul Rahman said the people must fly the Jalur Gemilang at their premises to mark the Merdeka month without being asked.

“The people, the younger generation in particular, must be made aware of the sacrifices and the obstacles faced by previous leaders in achieving the independence of this beloved country,” he said.

In this connection, he stressed that the people must always be united to defend the country’s independence.

Earlier in his speech, state Information Department director Resat Salleh, who is also the convoy leader, said he was grateful that the locals had responded very well to the `Fly the Jalur Gemilang campaign.

The programme, he added, also represented an opportunity to offer aid to the needy such as the orphans, single mothers, the disabled and senior citizens.

At the end of the ceremony, 19 single mothers received hampers from the VIPs present, including Resat, Dr Abdul Rahman, Batu Danau assemblyman Paulus Palu Gumbang, Multimedia and Communication Commission regional director Ahmad Nor Hisham, president of Social Media Sarawak Wan Abdillah Edruce and Limbang District Officer Anyie Ngau.
