KUCHING: KTS subsidiaries Kastima Logging and Teleng Logging recently contributed RM94,200 to Rumah Kahei in Belaga.

The contribution was handed over by KTS security advisor Datuk Vincent Chapman to Maren Uma Beatrice Kedoh Tajang at Crown Towers here. Among those present were Belaga district officer Abdul Halim Abdullah and Temenggong Dato Sri Nyipa Bato.

Beatrice said the contribution was meaningful to the residents of Rumah Kahei as it could be used to construct the new longhouse.

“The new longhouse will be able to accommodate over 90 ‘pintu’ (doors). The total cost is about RM1 million. We are already working on it (the construction),” she said.

The project included the construction of a jetty and upgrading of the drainage system, she added.

Beatrice said a new longhouse was urgently needed because the July 2008 fire had destroyed some 50 doors.

“Furthermore, some 20 blocks had been pulled down as they were not safe to live in,” she said, adding that the original longhouse, which was home to some 800 residents, was constructed some 300 years ago.

Meanwhile, Vincent said KTS would try its best to help residents of Rumah Kahei in “every way we can.”

“KTS will give assistance to Rumah Kahei in areas such as the provision of building materials. Whatever they asked, we will help if we can,” he pledged.

Abdul Halim also expressed his appreciation to KTS for the contribution as it could go a long way to help the people of Rumah Kahei.

Before the simple handing over ceremony, the guests visited KTS Gallery. They were briefed by gallery officer Phyllis Pang on the history as well as businesses of KTS. Accompanying them were KTS executives Collin Goh and Felicia Ng and Vincent’s personal assistant Liu Kim Foon.
