LABUAN: Labuan Immigration Department director Sarbini Hussein yesterday urged employers here to register their foreign workers with the department.

“The department is now giving the opportunity for employers to register or renew their foreign workers’ registration documents.

“Likewise, foreigners who have overstayed here in the island should come to the department to register themselves.

“We are now offering three days, until August 21, as amnesty to those who break the country’s immigration law,” he said.

Sarbini added that employers or foreigners should not worry and should not think that the three days given to them was a trap.

“I assure you that we are not going to take any legal action during the three days. But after August 21, we will launch enforcement or operation and those detained will be charged according to the law,” he said.

He said the department’s counter would be opened from 8am to 10pm daily during the amnesty period.

Sarbini also urged illegal immigrants to do so for they too were excluded from being taken action against during the three days.

Department statistics this month show that there are 1,807 registered foreign workers with 507 registered employers here from the services, manufacturing, construction and agriculture sectors.

There are an estimated 398 illegal immigrants living in Labuan comprising 164 Indonesians, 233 Filipinos and one Pakistani.
