398,708 foreigners registered under 5P

ASSISTANT Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Radin Malleh yesterday disclosed that 398,708 foreigners were registered during the 5P programme which was carried out in the state recently.

Radin said 237,338 were legal foreign workers while the remaining 161,370 were illegal immigrants.

Replying to Elopura assemblyman Au Kam Wah at the State Assembly sitting yesterday, Radin said that the plantation sector had the highest number of foreign workers at 102,735.

This is followed by the agriculture sector with 67,228 workers, manufacturing sector 30,480 workers, housemaids 14,137, construction sector 12,847 and the service sector 9,911.

The illegal immigrants who registered themselves during the 5P programme were also employed in these sectors, he said.

“The sectors involved are plantation (91,317), agriculture (16,376), construction (9,103), manufacturing (7,922), service (2,125), housemaids (1,742) while 32,785 were employed in other sectors,” he said.

Aw had asked for the number of legal foreign workers and illegal immigrants registered during the 5P programme that was conducted in July.
