KOTA KINABALU: An elderly man was injured after he was assaulted by a man for allegedly causing an accident yesterday.

It is believed that the incident happened around noon when the victim, identified as Joseph, 72, was assaulted by the assailant who used an iron pipe to smash his Proton Saga car’s windscreen and windows for allegedly causing a three-ton lorry to overturn and land on its side at Jalan Tuaran Bypass.

It is said that Joseph was coming out of Kampung Rampayan and wanted to make a U-turn back to Menggatal when the driver of the three-ton lorry, who was heading to Luyang from Tamparuli, lost control of the lorry and overturned.

Another lorry driver who saw the incident, then pulled over at the side of the road and attacked the victim with the four-foot iron pipe.

“After I came out of the junction, I heard a screeching sound and saw the lorry skid before it overturned.

“I then stopped my car to look but did not come out.

“A couple of minutes later, a man came and started smashing my car’s windscreen and windows with an iron pipe.

“I was shocked and frightened but did not dare come out of my car for fear that the assailant might attack me,” said Joseph, who suffered injuries on his right hand, arm and face when he was cut by broken glasses due to the attack.

Joseph then called his son who came and brought him to hospital.

A police patrol car that happened to be in the area, came to investigate but the attacker had fled the scene.
