Court orders four day remand for suspected thief

MIRI: A man apprehended by the police for stealing several clothing articles at a shopping complex here have been ordered by the Magistrate Court here to be remanded for four days to facilitate police investigation.

Magistrate Fazira Azlina Mohd Rofli meted out the remand order requested by investigation officer, Sergeant Chiu Ann Yan under Section 117 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

In his application, Chiu told the Magistrate that on Aug 25, a man lodged a police report at Miri Central Police Station (CPS).

In his report, the complainant claimed that at about 2.30pm the same day, while on duty at the second floor of the shopping complex, he with the help of a security guard had apprehended the suspect and confiscated a backpack containing two shirts and two pants worth RM360 suspected to be stolen items.

Based on the report received, at about 3pm the same day, police arrested the suspect.

In his application, Chiu disclosed that the four days remand on the suspect aged 22 year-old was needed to enable the police to facilitate a thorough investigation.

Also, the police needed to record his statement.

The Magistrate Court fixed Aug 28 for further mention of the case.
