KOTA KINABALU: Rouziana Amin was among 10 women accepted to train as professional firefighters by the Fire and Rescue Services Department (Bomba).

Born in Keningau, Rouziana, 21, was happy that her dream to be a women firefighter has finally come true.

“I have always wanted to be a woman firefighter as there are not many women ready to take such challenges,” she said when met at the trainee registration at the Fire and Rescue Department academic centre in Jalan Sulaman in Sepangar here yesterday.

For Edward Pretoes, 19, being recruited and train as a firefighter is nothing new as he was a former cadet firefighter while studying in SMK Tambunan.

“With all the training I received as a cadet firefighter, I am confident and ready to face any challenges during the training to be a firefighter,” said the Tambunan boy.

A total of 179 people from Sabah and Labuan have been accepted to undergo six months’ training as firefighters and rescue personnel.

Malaysia Fire and Rescue Services Department assistant director general of academics Zulkarnain Mohd Kassim, who was at the academic centre to welcome the new
recruits, said out of the figure, 172 were from Sabah while seven from Labuan.

“This year we have 10 women accepted to undergo training, where 119 would be sent to Wakaf Tapai academic centre in Terengganu, while the remaining to Sabah,” he said yesterday.

Also present were State Fire and Rescue Department director Nordin Pauzi and Kota Kinabalu and Tuaran Academy commander Zainal Madasin.
