KOTA KINABALU: A motorcyclist died while his pillion rider suffered serious injuries after the machine they were travelling in knocked against a streetlight pole at Km 6.5 Kepayan Road here early yesterday morning.

Jumri Zulkefli @ Rudot, 17, from Pitas, succumbed to serious head injuries at the scene while his friend, Wira Rudad broke his hand and leg in the 2.15am incident.

It is believed that the victims were on their way to Tanjung Aru from the Jalan Pahlawan traffic light when Rudot lost control of his motorcycle and rammed into the streetlight pole.

Both victims were thrown a couple of metres away and landed in a drain.

Acting city police chief DSP Peter Anak Umbuas, when contacted yesterday, confirmed the incident and said police believed the incident was due to a slippery road as it was raining at that time.

“Both victims were taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital and I am made to understand that the injured victim is still unconscious,” he said.

Peter urged eyewitnesses to come forward to assist police in their investigation under Section 41 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
