Patients wife killed after ambulance involved in crash

KINABATANGAN: The wife of a patient being rushed to Duchess of Kent Hospital, Sandakan was killed when the ambulance was involved in in a crash at Km73 Jalan Sandakan-Lahad Datu yesterday.

Kinabatangan district police chief DSP Jaini Abdul Kadir said the patient’s wife, Suarni Binti Laube,30, died at 1.45pm while receiving treatment at the hospital.

He said the accident occured at about 6.30am when the ambulance from Kinabatangan Hospital was sending the patient  accompanied by his wife and a doctor.

On arrival at the scene, the driver failed to control the ambulance after trying to avoid a 4WD vehicle which strayed into its path after avoiding a pothole.

“The ambulance was flung to the roadside and overturned in a ditch causing Suarni to suffer serious stomach injury,” he said when contacted.

The driver, the doctor and patient suffered only minor injuries and were sent for treatment at Kinabatangan Hospital. – Bernama
