Hong Leong Bank appoints new chief financial officer

KUCHING: Hong Leong Bank Bhd (HLBB) has appointed Sanjay Uppal as its new chief financial officer and chief operating officer for Group Finance effective July 27.

AN EXPERIENCED LEADER: Uppal brings a distinctive mix of corporate finance, strategy and balance sheet management skills in delivering strategic growth ambitions and establishing robust governance framework for financial institutions.

Uppal is a seasoned chief financial officer (CFO) with over 19 years of experience at the strategic and tactical levels in banks across the Asian and Middle Eastern markets including Singapore, India, Taiwan, the Philippines, Indonesia and the United Arab Emirates (UAE).

According to a press release by HLBB yesterday, “Uppal brings a distinctive mix of corporate finance, strategy and balance sheet management skills in delivering strategic growth ambitions and establishing robust governance framework for financial institutions.”

Uppal was attached to Standard Chartered as the CFO in its Taiwan, the Philippines and the UAE offices as well as the global head of finance and strategy for its Wealth Management business. He has also served as the group CFO at Emirates NBD, the largest banking group in the Middle East as well as a director on the board of its investment bank and private equity business.

Prior to joining HLBB, Uppal was the chief executive officer of StraitsBridge Advisors Pte Ltd in Singapore. It is a firm that provides management consulting and advisory services.

He holds a Post Graduate Diploma in Management (MBA) and Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical and Electronics.
Uppal succeeds Premod Paul Thomas who has served with HLBB for three years before recently being transferred to the Hong Leong Group’s Guoco Leisure Limited as its CFO in Singapore.
