MIRI: The opposition is only good at fault-finding and making noises, and not contributing directly to the city’s development.

Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin was frustrated with the opposition’s habit of finding faults with the Barisan Nasional (BN) government.

“The opposition only knows how to complain about everything, and whatever we do, they have nothing good to say,” said Lee after visits to project sites with the media and the Drainage and Irrigation Department (DID) staff recently.

Lee was annoyed with the way the opposition raised issues without checking their facts carefully first.

“For example, they criticised the bamboo foundation technique used for the new access road being built over peat land in Tudan, but didn’t understand why it’s done that way,” said Lee who hoped that the people will allow time for projects being undertaken in the city to be completed before blaming the government.

Lee stressed that the city’s development projects are ongoing, and the BN government is always working hard to solve the people’s problems.

“Certain problems take time to resolve, and can’t be done instantly or quickly,” he said.

He cited the drainage problem in Kg Luak which took Lee and the DID folks one year to persuade the owner of a private land to allow a drain to be built across the land.

Lee was satisfied with the progress made in building the 280m drain in Kg Luak costing RM200,000 which started last month, and should be completed in another month.

Meanwhile, DID Miri and Bintulu division director Law Wee explained that two drains will be built along the sides of the dead-end road and merge into one drain via a culvert, and is expected to alleviate the residents’ problem of putting up with two to three feet deep waters during a flood.

Law suggested that enquiries be directed to his or other relevant departments which have the right expertise, to learn more about solving a problem, and not simply criticise without understanding the technicalities involved.
