MIRI: Prepaid mobile phone users has the right to boycott any telecommunication company (telco) which insists on imposing a six per cent service tax on its prepaid reloads and prepaid starter/SIM packs.
Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin said the majority of the users had disagreed with the decision, which was announced recently, as it represented a financial burden.
“Telcos should not impose the service tax on their services as most of the users are from the low-income group and students,” he told reporters at PBB Senadin’s Hari Raya gathering in Kampung Pengkalan Lutong’s community hall yesterday.
Furthermore, he added, the government had not given them (telcos) the green light to impose this tax.
“We hope that perhaps the Malaysia Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) can say something about the issue as such additional charges would only create more economic problems for people in the low-income group.”
Lee said the telcos should give the welfare of its users due attention.
“I believe the telcos have been making profits from the telecommunication service industry. Instead of focusing too much on their profit-oriented agenda, why not sacrifice a bit through the spirit of corporate social responsibility (CSR).”
