MIRI: The 1Malaysia Miri City Street Party 2011 celebration and countdown to Malaysia Day on Thursday night attracted a few thousand people despite a drizzle that turned into a downpour.

The organisers, led by SUPP Miri Youth chief Keith Chin, promised revellers a great time with various performances by artistes on and off the stage, as well as special offers on food and drinks by eateries along Yu Seng Road closed to traffic for the street party.

Visitors to the party registered themselves at the counter to obtain their numbers for the lucky draw which offered a variety of prizes including five IPad2 and 10 handphones.

To prevent duplication, participants were stamped on their hands with indelible ink after obtaining their number for the lucky draw.

There was also an inflatable game house for the kids and vendors selling party accessories.

The guest of honour Minister of Public Health and Environment Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, accompanied by other guests, joined the largely young crowd of people before delivering his speech.

The rain started pouring after Wong’s speech, and guests and visitors moved into the available tents and nearby shops though it did not deter the crowd from enjoying the performances.

Also present were Assistant Minister of Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Miri mayor Lawrence Lai, Miri Resident Antonio Kahti Galis,
Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, SUPP Pujut chairman Andy Chia Chu Fatt, and prominent businessmen Hii King Chiong and Tan Sri Jimmy Lau.
