SPAD: Reregistration period of commercial vehicles will not be extended

SEPANG: The Public Land Transportation Commission (SPAD) will not extend the date of reregistering commercial vehicles which ends on Sept 30.

Its chairman, Tan Sri Syed Hamid Albar said, to date, only 50 per cent of the 400,000 vehicles in the category had been registered with SPAD.

“Only 45,000 of the 90,000 operators are registered with SPAD. The time given, (to register) from April 1, is so long. Indeed, it is long,” he told a press conference after a launching ceremony for ALM (Airport Limo (M) Sdn Bhd) Transformation, here, yesterday.

Syed Hamid stressed, the operators should not trivialise the registration exercise because its aim was to standardise the national transportation industry, and ensure the welfare of the operators.

He said, numerous ways had been carried out, including using the print and electronic media, to explain the importance of registering their businesses with SPAD.

He said, failure of the operators to reregister would cause the licences of their vehicles to expire, and this would burden the operators.

The operators could also be fined a maximum of RM50,000, or jailed three years, or both.

The provision for reregistration was allocated under the Commercial Vehicles Licensing Board Act (Amendment) 2010, Syed Hamid said.

Meanwhile, Syed Hamid lauded Airport Limo (M) Sdn Bhd’s rebranding move by introducing 100 new Proton Persona taxis equipped with internet facilities, through the use of the Ipad 2, to enable passengers to surf the internet. — Bernama

“I believe, innovations and upgrading services, will boost the national taxi services to a higher level, in fact, better than some advanced countries in the world,” he added. — Bernama
