SANDAKAN: Another special education class will be set up in the state to provide education to children with special needs.

Education director Datuk Dr Muhiddin Yusin said the class was expected to be implemented in early 2012 at the Likas Hospital, Kota Kinabalu.

“This special education school has received approval from the Ministry of Education and cooperation from the Ministry of Health,” he said, adding it would be the first special education class to be opened in a hospital here in Sabah.

According to him, the class is an effort by the Education Department to help children with health problems and who have to be warded in the hospital for a long period of time.

“While helping to give education to children with special needs in the hospital, the class will also be opened as a temporary learning institution for other warded normal children.

“It is a way to help the hospital in dealing with children who are unable to receive education while receiving treatment,” he said after officiating the state-level Hari Raya celebration of a special education school at SMK Agama Hall here yesterday.

About 450 children with special needs, teachers and parents from 13 schools around Sabah attended the celebration.
