KUALA LUMPUR: The appointment of members for the National Wages Consultative Council (NWCC) would  be made on Wednesday, said Human Resources Minister Datuk Dr S Subramaniam.

Subramaniam said the council would function as an independent body to review and set minimum wages based
on the tripartite principle involving the government, employers and workers.

The council will be made up of 25 members comprising six workers representatives, six employers representatives, five government
representatives, five  independent representatives, a chairman, a deputy chairman and a secretary from the Human Resources Ministry.

“Due to a request, the number of representatives representing workers and employers had been increased from five to six.

The request was agreed by the government to give them an opportunity to make decisions,” he told reporters after opening the “National Talent Summit” here yesterday.

In July 2011, the Dewan Rakyat had approved the National Wages Consultative Council Bill 2011 to pave the way for the setting up of the National Wages Consultative Council.

Subramaniam said the council would convene its first meeting after the appointment.

Meanwhile, Subramaniam said his ministry was in the process of developing a special body to enable captains of industries to advise the government on the needs of the respective industries.

The proposed body would act as a guide to the government in ensuring the necessary curriculums and education in the country in tandem with the needs of the industries, he said.

“The cooperation between the industry players and the government will ensure the success of the government’s vision to become a high income nation by 2020,” he said. — Bernama
