MUKAH: A group of local voters yesterday called on Barisan Nasional (BN) top leadership to nominate prominent businessman Dato Sri Mahmud Abu Bekir Taib as the BN candidate for the Mukah parliamentary seat in this coming general election.

Led by their spokesman Siri Dani, the group were in agreement that this was necessary in order for BN to retain the Mukah seat with an even bigger majority and also to accelerate the pace of development in Mukah, which is the administrative centre of Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) and Tanjung Manis Halal Hub (TMHH)

This was revealed in a statement made available to the local media at a peaceful gathering held at Tebingan Sungai Mukah waterfront here yesterday.

“Views from the grassroots in Mukah clearly indicated that they wanted prominent businessman Mahmud Taib to stand as the BN candidate in this coming general election. We want a leader who is active and has the people’s interest at heart, capable of bringing greater development and progress.

“Most importantly, we need a young leader who has the knowledge, energy, creativity and strong commitment in leading and guiding us, especially the younger generations to enjoy good employment and stable income by harnessing the tremendous economic spin-offs brought about by SCORE and TMHH development initiatives.

“Moreover, it is imperative for Abu Bekir to become the leader here, the hometown of his respectable ancestors,” said Siri Dani adding that the people in Mukah had great confidence and trust in Abu Bekir’s leadership quality which runs deep in his family blood, as clearly seen in his father Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, who is Chief Minister and Balingian assemblyman.

A respectable corporate figure, Mahmud Taib holds the post of group deputy chairman of Cahaya Mata Sarawak Bhd (CMS), a public listed company on the main board of Bursa Malaysia. The incumbent Member of Parliament for Mukah is Dato Sri Dr Muhammad Leo Toyad. Mukah seat comprises of the Balingian and Dalat state constituencies.
