KUCHING: Villagers in the Seberang Hilir area have been advised to be open minded with the ‘Darul Hana’ village expansion programme as it will bring great benefits to them.

Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said he was confident that the programme would transform the area into a modern village.

Speaking at a Hari Raya gathering organised by the RT of Kampung Bintawa Hilir yesterday, Dr Rahman pointed that those relocated would only be moved to a nearby area in an organised and well-planned area.

“The expansion will take into account the road, drainage and other amenities to ensure that the people will be in a conducive environment. Therefore, there is no question of bad outcome from the programme,” he said.

He urged the villagers not to listen to rumours that they would be relocated to remote areas located far from the city.

“The whole process is just a restructuring effort for a more modern environment which is on par with other areas within Kuching,” he explained.

He said the programme would be implemented soon, and once completed it would solved various types of problems faced by the people, including overcrowding issues.

Met by reporters later, Dr Rahman revealed that the People’s Assistance Programme (PBR), which involved villagers in the Seberang Hilir area, was progressing smoothly, with about 50 houses in the waiting list.

“As we are relying on funds, we hope that those who had applied and had yet to get their houses fixed to be patient,” he said, adding that each house needed an allocation of between RM38,000 and RM40,000 to be fully repaired with quality materials.

“Previously, there were contractors who used asbestos and low quality wood. This is unacceptable as they were doing it to cut construction costs,” said Dr Rahman.

On contractors who failed to produce quality workmanship under the PBR project, Dr Rahman
said they would be blacklisted.

Also present yesterday were Santubong Pemanca Rashidi Junai and Kampung Bintawa village head Harry Siri.
