Nigerian students hold tree-planting ceremony

KUCHING: Nigerian students in Kuching will be planting trees this Friday to commemorate their country’s 51st Independence Day which falls on Saturday, Oct 1.

The trees will be planted at designated tree planting areas at the old State Legislative Assembly building from 8.30am.

After that, a press conference as well as a small ceremony to be officiated by DBKU mayor and Nigerian lecturers will be held at 10am at the DBKU office.

“This would be the second consecutive year we are celebrating our Independence Day in Kuching. We would like to continue last year’s tree planting drive by planting more trees for Kuching city,” said event co-ordinator Mark Ekisowei in a press release.

Apart from that, they also had a Unity Football Tournament with local football teams here.

The first round was participated by four teams, Sandfield FC (Nigerian students’ team), Sigat United FC, Pustaqa FC and Rama FC last Saturday.

The final between Sandfield FC and Sigat United FC will be held this Saturday at Padang B, State Stadium from 9am to 2pm.

The finale of the celebration — Nigerian Independence Day Dinner Celebration – will be held at The Banquet on Oct 2.
