HANOI: Tropical Storm Haitang hits Vietnam’s central provinces on Tuesday before downgrading into depression later in the afternoon and moving towards central neighboring Laos, Xinhua News quoted the Vietnamese Centre for Hydrometeorology Forecasting report.

Its circulation caused heavy rain in central provinces between Nghe An and Quang Nam as well as in the Central Highlands. Water from the local Kien Giang, Bo and Huong rivers rose high to the emergency level, said the report.

Local online VNExpress also reported on Tuesday that heavy rain flooded many streets and broke trees in central Quang Tri province, and damaged many houses in its Vinh Linh district.

Low areas in Hue city were also inundated where local people were isolated by water and had to ride boats for transport.

According to the latest report from the Central Committee for Storm and Flood Control (CCSFC), a 31-year-old man from Phu Yen province died on Monday morning when he fell to the sea from his fishing boat, and another fishing boat from Da Nang got sunken by the sea waves.

Storm-hit authorities had plans to move their residents from flooded areas or out of places with possible landslides, as well as store food for emergency cases.

Meanwhile, the CCSFC warned localities of the on-going Typhoon Nesat, which is forecast to possibly move from the Philippines to hit the northern Vietnam, resulting heavy rain in capital Hanoi and other northern provinces this Friday.
