No official word yet on lifting of Indonesian maid ban

KUALA LUMPUR: The Ministry of Human Resources has yet to be informed officially by Indonesia of the purported lifting of freeze on maids working in Malaysia soon, said its minister, Datuk Dr S Subramaniam.

“I have not received any official information so far, I just read it in the newspapers. As long as I am not officially informed by Indonesia, I decline to comment,” he told Bernama at his office here yesterday.

According to reports, Indonesia is expected to lift the ban next week, with the first batch of maids coming to Malaysia in December or early January.

Subramaniam said if the report was true, the government is committed in honouring its undertakings as promised in the agreement between the two countries.

“I am looking forward for the freeze to be lifted as many employers in Malaysia eagerly waited for this decision. We are very concern on the welfare of Indonesian maids.

“Although we can employ maids from Myanmar, Cambodia, India and the Philippines, Malaysian employers prefer Indonesian maids due to language and religious factors,” he said. — Bernama
