PETALING JAYA: Two people recounted yesterday how they were thrown off their feet in an explosion believed to have been triggered by a gas leak at a shopping mall in Subang Jaya near here early today.

“The explosion hurled us back. Then I saw fire at several spots in the building. The glass panels of a clothing store shattered and many things came flying out,” said Daryl Chua Chin Hong, 27, of Seri Hartamas.

Chua and his friend, Hibbie Tan Wern Fang, 23, were about to pay for their parking tickets at the Empire Shopping Gallery when the explosion occurred at about 3.30am.

They were injured in the body, hands and legs, and were sent to the Universiti Malaya Medical Centre for treatment.

Chua and Tan were talking in the vicinity of their parked cars in front of the mall when the explosion took place. Their cars, a Volkswagen and a Honda City, were damaged.

“I was worried that something worse would happen and quickly took Tan away from there. We estimate the damage suffered by us at more than RM100,000,” he said.

Selangor Fire and Rescue assistant director of operations Mohd Sani Harul said the explosion was believed to have been caused by leaking gas on the lower ground floor of the mall where food outlets are located. — Bernama
