SIBU: Lanang MP Datuk Tiong Thai King responded promptly to fire victims’ plight after Rumah Abong at Jalan Tangi Spur at Mile 20, Oya Road was razed on Friday morning.

Yesterday he presented each family with RM800 at his service centre. It came from the welfare fund for his constituency.

The cash aid was handed over by his political secretary Tang Tung King.

Tiong was concerned after he learnt of the fire that made eight families homeless.

Tang said apart from the cash aid from Tiong, the Lanang MP would on Tuesday send building materials including planks and roof sheets for rebuilding their home.

“This will come together with aid from the Welfare Department in the form of clothes and food.”

Also present yesterday morning to comfort the victims was Sibu SUPP organising secretary Oliver Kuo.

The fire occurred at 9am as the adults were tending their farms
and preparing their children for school.

No one was hurt, but the victims suffered heavy losses as very few adults were at home and the fire spread quickly.

As telephone reception was poor, the victims could not get help fast enough.

They watched helplessly as their longhouse turned into ashes in 30 minutes.
