MBKS to get feedback on upgrading of KMC Flats

KUCHING: Kuching City South Council (MBKS) is setting up a questionnaire for the coming survey to collect feedback on the possible upgrading of KMC Flats here.

Mayor James Chan  said on Friday the council required more time to come out with the questionnaire to better reflect the needs of the residents.

“It is an exercise where I can’t give any time frame. I sincerely believe we should not rush into it. The planning must be done properly in accordance with what the people feel.

“We have to make sure whatever the planning is, it will suit everybody and, of course, ensure dwellers there (KMC Flat) have a place to stay also (after the upgrading). That is very important,” he said.

Speaking to reporters after chairing the full council meeting at its headquarters here, Chan said the local council would collect feedback from all sectors of the community.

He did not rule out the possibility of redeveloping the area as the existing flats are old and their safety questionable.

However, he gave the assurance that the well being of the residents of the flats will be protected as long as he is the mayor of the council.

“MBKS is a very fair and transparent council. Whatever is being done, we will definitely ensure the people who live here are protected,” he stressed.

On community programmes of MBKS, Chan called on non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to work together to enhance the council’s programmes.

He pointed out even though the government had promised to give more funding to local councils, it would be good if NGOs or the private sector play an active part in this matter.

Chan added MBKS would look at creative ways in organising neighbourhood programmes.

For instance,  after the council’s suggestion a developer had agreed to organise a party or gathering at its housing estates to let residents know their neighbours.

“We can’t just wait for instructions. We have to take the initiative. If there is something we can’t do it alone, we must try some other innovative approach,” he said.
