KUCHING: Sarikei Bernas beat Kapit 5-2 in the final to win the Sports League Futsal Tournament at Arena Sukan yesterday.

Assistant Minister of Social Development (Youth) Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who was present to give away the prizes to the winners, in his speech lauded the effort by the Youth and Sports Department (KBS) to organise the event.

“Futsal is good avenue to encourage youth to get involved in a healthy activity as it is a popular sport across the nation,” said Karim who later on urged his department to hold more similar events in the future.

He praised the participating teams from outside Kuching such as Kapit, Sarikei and Sri Aman, as it was a good way to foster close rapport among youths from other divisions and at the same time diverting them away from social ills.

The final yesterday also saw Sri Aman A and Kuching as joint third placing.

A total of 16 teams took part in the tournament, and the champion received cash RM1,500 and first runner up RM800. The top two teams also received trophies and medals while the joint third placing took away cash RM500.
