MIRI: The police have teamed up with Miri City Council (MCC) to resolve the ‘China Doll’ issues which had been bugging the city of late.

It is alleged that many Chinese nationals who were working at reflexology centres here as masseurs have been providing extra ‘services’ to their customers.

“No syndicates are involved … they (China Dolls) were brought in by individuals who are running the centres or other kind of businesses,” said state police commissioner Datuk Mortadza Nazarene here on Saturday after launching the Refine and Expand Feet on the Street programme.

He revealed that his men had held discussions with Mayor Lawrence Lai on this issue, and MCC had agreed to suspend the licence of any centre found peddling ‘extra services’ for their customers.

Asked about Miri being projected as a `gangster city’ certain quarters, Mortadza said police were working very hard to tackle crimes here.

“It’s not true at all (that Miri is gangster city), as we have busted gambling dens and errant reflexology centres. With such successes, how can this `title’ be given to Miri?” he asked.

On car theft, he said police would join forces with the Civil Defence Department (JPAM) and Rela on this matter.

“Rela has promised to give 200 of its personnel and JPAM 100. They will be working on shifts during the programme (feet on the street programme).”

On the programme launched yesterday, he said it formed part of National Key Result Area (NKRA) to decrease street crime index.

This year, for Sarawak, the target is to reduce the percentage from 58 (in 2009) to 48 per cent.

Two police stations here have been identified as ‘Hot Spot’ stations for this programme – Miri Central Police Station and Lutong Police Station.

Among those present were Assistant Minister of Sports Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Miri police chief ACP Jamaluddin Ibrahim and his deputy Supt Ismail Idris.
