ISA will only be repealed once new laws are ready — Nazri

KUALA LUMPUR: The two proposed new laws for national security will have to come into force first before the Internal Security Act (ISA) can be repealed, said Minister in the Prime Minister Department Datuk Seri Mohamed Nazri Abdul Aziz.

He said the government wanted to ensure that the two new Acts are ready before the the abolition of the ISA.

He stressed that there should not be a gap between the installation of the new laws and abolishment of the ISA so that there would be no complications, including the need to release ISA detainees.

He told this to reporters at Parliament’s lobby here yesterday.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had recently said that the motion to abolish the ISA would be tabled in March next year.

Najib yesterday tabled motions in the Dewan Rakyat to repeal the Banishment Act 1959 and the Restricted Residence Act 1933. — Bernama
