SIBU: A survey on 327 people in Bawang Assan has found that eight per cent, or 27 of them, are suffering from gout.

The survey was carried out recently by Unimas students as part of their public health and medical community course.
The respondents from nine longhouses were aged 18 and above. Sixty per cent of them were females.
Leader of the research team, Mohd Fuad Rosli, said they spent five days interviewing the respondents about gout.
“The majority of them (27) found to be suffering from gout are men aged between 30 and 50,” he said at a ‘Health Intervention’ programme on gout held at Rumah Jibul James in Bawang Assan recently.
A political secretary to the Chief Minister, Andrew Shilling Banggit, represented Minister of Local Government and Community Development Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh at the function.
According to Fuad, the result of the survey showed that many people were unaware of gout and its causes.
