No by-election for Johol state seat — EC

KUALA LUMPUR: The Election Commission (EC) has confirmed that no by-election will be held for Johol seat despite the death of state assemblyman Datuk Roslan Md Yusof yesterday.

EC deputy chairman Datuk Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said this is because the Negeri Sembilan State Legislative Assembly has exceeded its term of three years.

“We have not received notification from the State Legislative Assembly Speaker that Johol seat is vacant. Even if there is a vacancy, a by-election will not be held.

“This is because the State’s Constitution states that a by-election will not be held when the term of three years ends and Negeri Sembilan state assembly ended in April,” he told Bernama here today.

Wan Ahmad said after expiry of the three year term, the vacant seats would only be filled following a general election.

Roslan, 58, died in Tunku Ampuan Najihah Hospital, Kuala Pilah at 4:45am after being admitted for treatment after complaining of breathing difficulty yesterday.

The Kuala Pilah Umno division vice-chief leave wife Datin Zawayah Marzuki, 53, and eight children, three male and five female, age 17-28 years.

Roslan won the Johol seat after defeating Kamarudin Md Tahir  of PAS with a majority of 1,263 votes in the 2008 general election. — Bernama
