SHAH ALAM: The High Court here yesterday set Dec 1 to hear and decide whether Teoh Beng Hock’s family can proceed
with their application for a review of the open verdict delivered by the Coroner’s Court in the inquest into the political aide’s death.

Senior Assistant Registrar Khairul Nizam Abu Bakar also set Nov 10 for the court to obtain original documents from the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) into Teoh’s death and Nov 18 for the prosecution to submit a written submission on their application to intervene in the review application.

Lawyers Gobind Singh Deo and S.Prakash were present on behalf of Teoh’s family, while deputy public prosecutor Muhammad Anas Mahadzir appeared for the prosecution.

Teoh’s family filed the review application on Sept 30 this year under Section 323 of the Criminal Procedure Code.

Prior to this, Attorney-General Tan Sri Abdul Gani Patail had filed a similar application on Jan 7 this year, which was two days after Coroner Azmil Muntapha Abas ruled that the death of the Selangor political aide in 2009 was neither a suicide nor homicide.

However, on Sept 22 he withdrew the application on grounds that the review was filed before the RCI was established and that the application was no longer necessary as the RCI had ruled that Teoh’s death was due to suicide.

Gobind, however, said the review application still stands ad they had filed their submission before Abdul Gani withdrew his application.

Teoh, 30, the political secretary to Selangor State Executive Councillor Ean Yong Hian Wah, was found dead on the fifth floor corridor of Plaza Masalam in
Shah Alam, Selangor, on July 16, 2009, after giving a statement at the office of the Selangor Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission located on the 14th floor of the same building. — Bernama
