KUCHING: The dream to see high-performing Dayak companies listed on Bursa Malaysia could come true soon.

Dayak Chamber of Commerce and Industry (DCCI) said this could be realised if equal opportunities were given to them under programmes and projects proposed under Budget 2012.

“DCCI is also hopeful that a few genuinely potentially qualified and high performance Dayak companies from Sarawak will be given an opportunity to participate in the listing exercise in Bursa Malaysia through the Teraju Programme initiatives, as stated in the Budget,” it said in a statement jointly issued by its secretary general Libat Langub and executive secretary Terence Temenggung Jayang.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, when tabling the Budget 2012 last Friday, said Teraju, among others, would guide about 1,100 high performing Bumiputera companies with potential to be listed on Bursa Malaysia.

On a related matter, DCCI said its member Class F contractors members were hopeful and optimistic that they would be included to participate in the RM500 million allocation of infrastructure projects for Class F Projects.

This is in response to Najib’s announcement for such allocation for basic infrastructure upgrading projects to provide opportunities for 29,000 Class F contractors nationwide registered with the Contractor Service Sector.

“(By giving them opportunities), this will greatly assist them in enhancing their business skills, sustain their business income and enhance their participation in business activities,” it said.

DCCI also said it wished to appeal to the government for the Dayak community to be specifically allocated certain portions for the development of Dayak entrepreneurs and contractors.

This allocation, it explained, could come from the RM200 million funds given to the Ministry of Rural and Regional Development for development of Bumiputera entrepreneurs and contractors under the 2012 Budget.

“DCCI is also hopeful that the training allocation for youths through Strategic Action for Youth Programme (RM300 million) and Amanah Ikthiar Micro Financing (RM2.1bBillion) for Micro Financing to entrepreneurs, especially women, reaches out to deserving members of the Dayak business community,” it said.

DCCI also commended the prime minister for the opening of a Rural Transformation Centre in Sarawak which can benefit the mainly Dayak rural farmers.

“Although the Budget 2012 tries to cushion the high costs of living of the people by allocating the one-off cash assistance to the low income group, setting up more Kedai Rakyat, Agro Bazaars and extending Menu Rakyat 1 Malaysia, DCCI is of the view that a cohesive and a long term solution is needed.

“One of which is for the government to urgently implement the rural transformation plan which will spur socio-economic activities in the rural and semi-urban areas resulting in the community’s involvement in the cash economy towards upgrading to a better quality way of life, for all,” it said.
