SYDNEY: A 6.7-magnitude earthquake hit just off Papua New Guinea on Friday, the US Geological Survey said, Xinhua News reported.

The undersea quake occurred at a depth of 57 km, 103 km east of the mountain city of Lae and 315 km north of the capital Port Moresby, at 13.35 local time on Friday.

There was no immediate tsunami warning, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre. The extent of damage or casualties was not clear.

Papua New Guinea lies in the so-called “Ring of Fire”, an area where several tectonic plates collide.
