MIRI: Miri Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (MCCCI) will organise a mass wedding on the auspicious date of Nov 11 or 11-11-11.

The chamber of commerce is hoping to break its previous record of 90 couples for a mass wedding it organised in collaboration with Miri City Council (MCC) on Sept 9, 2009 (09-09-09).

“We now have 55 Chinese couples preparing to undergo civil marriage who have booked with us for 11-11-11, not including others who booked the date elsewhere,” said MCCCI chairman Datuk Sim Hock Guan during a courtesy call on Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai on Wednesday (Oct 12).

The deadline to join the mass nuptials is Oct 19. This is to enable the registrar of marriages to make the necessary arrangements.

The chamber of commerce will also hold its 10th Miri Chinese New Year (CNY) Bazaar along Jalan Raja and Jalan High Street from Jan 17-22.

“The response is very good, with occupancy of the 260 stalls at about 80 per cent, with about 50 to 60 stalls reserved for Bumiputeras to make it a multiracial event,” said Sim.

He called on MCC to install more lighting for visitors to the bazaar to increase the safety and security of vehicles parked nearby at the old wharf parking lot, MCC multi-storey car park, and Centre Point Commercial Centre.

Meanwhile Lai said MCC was happy to collaborate on the two events.

“This is a very good classic case of joint activity between the council and the chamber, in making Miri city a more vibrant place to live in,” he said.
