MIRI: Honeymoon packages can be used to attract more visitors and boost tourism for the resort city of Miri.

Complaints from various quarters about the lack of attractions in Miri to attract sufficient visitors and keep them coming back have left city planners scratching their heads on how to address the issue.

As such, Assistant Minister for Communications Datuk Lee Kim Shin suggested, “Miri city needs some attractive packages like that of a honeymoon package to introduce visitors to the resort city.”

Lee noted during the Karen Wedding Gallery showcase at Bintang Megamall on Friday that some local attractions that could be further developed and promoted are Tanjong Lobang’s Taman Selera and beachfront, Taman Awam’s hanging bridges and public park, Canada Hill and various other public parks and beaches.

“Bridal houses can create interesting honeymoon packages for the visitors from Peninsular Malaysia and other countries,” he said. He suggested the private sector to take the initiative to produce more interesting packages for visitors to the city, which could include shopping, food and beverages and sight-seeing.

Miri Mayor Lawrence Lai accompanied Lee in officiating at the wedding gallery showcase that saw several models posing and performing the catwalk in various types of bridal wear.

Company proprietor Karen Then also accompanied Lee and Lai throughout the event that was organised as part of Bintang Shopping Centre’s 15th anniversary celebration.
