Govt’s transparency causes opposition to create issues to divert attention

KANGAR: The transparency practised by the government in implementing its policies has caused the opposition to create issue after issue to divert public attention, Home Minister Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Tun Hussein said.

The minister said the government had done its level best for the people to the extent of leaving no room for criticism, especially by the opposition.

“Hence, when we managed to answer all their questions about a certain issue, they have no other choice but to raise another issue to divert attention,” he told reporters after attending the state-level Perdana briefing programme here yesterday.

Hishammuddin said the opposition, for example, had once accused the government of having certain agenda in awarding citizenship to Bangladeshi nationals.

The actual number of Bangladeshi involved was only 28 and although half of them were eligible to vote, only three or four were registered as voters, he said.

On the issue of phantom voters, Hishammuddin said it would be disclosed by the Parliamentary Select Committee, which also comprised three opposition members and one independent representative.

“Let the committee see the real picture on the issue concerning the relocation of voters and which party members were found to have been relocated the most,” he said.

Hishammuddin said under the leadership of Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Razak, the government had also abolished the Internal Security Act (ISA) and would replace it with a more relevant law, which would enable those involved in creating disorder to be brought to justice and not just detained without trial.

About 4,000 people attended the programme to listen to the briefing given by Hishammuddin, who is also Umno vice-president, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Ahmad Maslan and Perlis menteri Besar Datuk Seri Dr Md Isa Sabu. — Bernama
