USM postgraduate and doctorate programmes receive 1,168 new students

GEORGE TOWN: A total of 1,168 new students have registered for various postgraduate and doctorate programmes in the 2011/2012 academic session of Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM) here.

USM vice-chancellor Datuk Dr Omar Osman said from the total, USM accepted 442 international students from 31 countries including the United States, Canada, China, India, Kazakhstan, Pakistan and Palestine.

He said Iranians formed the largest foreign student group in the programmes with 113 students while 53 students each were from Indonesia and Iraq.

“I am pleased with the increase of postgraduate students this year who chose USM as the destination for
their Masters and Doctorate studies.

“The university’s management welcomes all students and hope with the expertise obtained, they would help expand the pool of ideas for the university so that it could compete at a higher level,” he said at a USM New Student Reception and presentation of credentials for new student ambassadors for 2011, here last night. — Bernama
