No ‘Africans’ problem in Sabah – director

KOTA KINABALU: The State Immigration Department has confirmed no foreign settlements, especially from Africa, are threatening the state’s security.

Its director, Mohammed Mentek said he had not received any reports or complaints about abuse of student pass or tourist pass by the Africans as their number is small and the situation is still manageable.

“The presence of Africans in Sabah is not a big issue as there are not many of them. They come as tourists, and if we find out that they have abused they pass, action will be taken against them.

“So far, we have only received applications for legal protection among those who are married to locals,” he said yesterday when asked to comment on whether the activities of foreigners, especially from Africa, have caused serious social problems in Sabah as is the case in various states in Peninsular Malaysia.

Mohammed advised the public, especially local women, to be cautious when dealing with foreigners.

He said this is important to prevent unwanted incidents such as being forced into prostitution and becoming drug mules.

“If they (foreigners) invite you for a holiday abroad, be careful. Do not quickly fall for their charm because nothing comes for free in this world,” he said.
