Sword found in 4WD that crashed into police car

KOTA KINABALU: Police are carrying out a thorough investigation into the incident where a man was shot dead by police personnel for crashing a four-wheel-drive vehicle into a police patrol car at Jalan Safoda in Kinarut on Tuesday.

Crime Investigation Department (CID) chief SAC Omar Mammah said police investigation showed that a machete and a samurai sword were found in the four-wheel-drive vehicle which crashed into the police patrol car.

The four-wheel-drive was also believed to be a stolen vehicle, said Omar, adding that the police were still trying to determine the identities of the suspects.

On Tuesday, a man, believed to be in his 30s, was shot dead by policemen after he allegedly crashed the four-wheel-drive vehicle into a police patrol car at a roadblock in an attempt to evade arrest.

But three other suspects in the four-wheel-drive managed to escape in 1.10am incident at Jalan Safoda in Kinarut.

It was said that two policemen in the police car were approaching the four-wheel-drive when it was rammed and pushed some 40 metres off the road.

The policemen, who were on their round at the area managed to jump out of the car and fired three gunshots at the vehicle, hitting one of the suspects.

Police also believed that the area had been used to dispose of stolen items such as electric cables and vehicles.

The case is being investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code for an attempt to murder law enforcement officers.
