KUCHING: Sarawak Information Systems Sdn Bhd (Sains) is stepping up its efforts to promote its products overseas and transform the state from an Information and Communication Technology (ICT) importer to exporter.

Sains chairman Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan said he was confident Sains could achieve this aim due to its innovative drive.

“Sains is always hungry to innovate, deliver and compete,” he said in his speech during Sains 20th Anniversary dinner at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching (BCCK) on Monday night.

Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud officiated at the function.

He believed that the goal to move from an ICT importer to exporter was achievable because the ICT industry is a level playing field.

“Sains have progressed so much in the last 20 years and now we are able to take part in a much bigger stage.

We have received major awards such as the Prime Minister’s ICT Quality Awards, the Asia Pacific ICT Alliance (Apicta) Award and was the only winner from Asean to win the United Nations World Summit Award,” he said.

Meanwhile, Sains chief executive officer Dato Teo Tien Hiong said to expand globally, the company must be able to convince foreign clients on the quality of their products.

“Sains started its initiatives 20 years ago when the state
was purely an ICT consumer. Now, the state is an ICT producer and we have made many significant progress since then,” he said.

Teo added that Sains was currently producing ICT products for New Zealand, Australia, Papua New Guinea, Indonesia, Brunei, Cambodia, Vietnam, China and Oman.

During the function, Taib presented the Sains ICT media awards which was won by The Borneo Post reporter Antonia Chiam, in the English category and Saffri Ali from Utusan Sarawak in the Bahasa Malaysia category.
