KUCHING: Over 80 hawkers trading in Kuching South City Council (MBKS) areas were sworn in at MBKS office here yesterday as members of a working committee which was recently set up.

According to mayor James Chan, the hawkers working committee is the first of its kind in Sarawak.

He said the members will bring forward hawkers’ problems or suggestions to improve their trading places and provide feedback on non- compliance of licence conditions or other contraventions besides cooperating with the council to ensure orderliness of the markets.

The appointment takes effect from this Oct until Dec 31 next year.

“Although there are so many hypermarkets coming up here, wet markets still play an important role in the local community. So hawkers should make their trading places more pleasant to attract more customers,” said Chan.

He pointed out that all hawkers at the markets have equal responsibilities to take care of and keep the places clean as cleanliness apart from good service was very important to attract customers.

He advised the hawkers to serve customers sincerely and improve the quality of their products and sell them at reasonable prices.

The representatives are chosen from markets and hawker centres – Kueh Siah Hong, Jubilee Ground, Upper Foochow, Batu Lintang, Kenyalang, Petanak, Hui Sing, Sungai Apong, Bintawa, Song Kheng Hai, Stutong and Pending.
