NS Dept mulls insurance scheme for instructors

BAU:  National Service Department (NSD) may consider introducing a Group Insurance Protection Scheme for its 3,500 instructors in 87 national service (NS) training camps throughout the country.

NSD director-general Datuk Abdul Hadi Awang Kechil acknowledged that it was important that the instructors had an insurance scheme for protection to cover any eventuality.

“Right now all our instructors and even I myself, like other civil servants, are not covered by any insurance policy unless on personal basis.

“Getting a group insurance sounds good and we may look into it further before making a decision but even if we introduce such a scheme we will not make it compulsory so that only those interested will get the policy. This is because we don’t want to burden them,” he said.

He told reporters this at a media conference during his official visit to Puncak Permai National Service (NS) training camp near here yesterday.

He was earlier asked whether the two female instructors from Sentosa NS Camp in Lundu who recently met with a serious accident while on their way back after attending a course in Sibu were eligible for group insurance claim.

It was learnt that both of them were badly injured after the Kancil car they were traveling in collided head-on with another vehicle coming from opposite direction.

“I was directed by our minister to visit the victims at the Sarawak General Hospital yesterday (Monday) and both of them were stable. They are both conscious,” he said.

He added that their respective families in Peninsular Malaysia also had already been informed and actually were already here to visit them.
