SIBU: SUPP Women’s chief here Kapitan Datuk Janet Lau has called on members to rally behind Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh in his bid to win the presidential race.

A MOMENT TO PONDER: Lau ponders for a moment before she cuts the celebration cake. At left is organising chairwoman Betty Wong and at right is SUPP Sibu Town Service Centre chairman Robert Lau Jr.

Speaking at the goodwill night of SUPP Sibu Town Service Centre here on Monday, Lau said members might not be able to make a total commitment to the party, “but, the least you could do is to give total loyalty to ensure the re-building of SUPP”.

She said it was only a month and 10 days away from the party election, and members must gather forces to put things in place for the rebuilding process.

“There is every reason for us to choose Wong as our next president. He is the only SUPP leader with a full ministerial post. He is Senior Minister, Second Finance Minister and Minister of Local Government and Community Development.”

Lau also reminded members of their roles, saying “you know what to do and who to support. We are all standing on the same line; we must remain united”.

She said that only when they were united, would the party be able to move forward.

“We have a common duty, goal and mission to do. The party needs us.”

She said members might have different views, “but, we must at least be loyal in working together, or else, we shall end up nowhere”.

She said they could not afford to split unity in the party. All played equally important political roles.

Meanwhile, Lau announced she would not contest in the branch election this month for the post of Sibu SUPP women’s chief.

“I shall pass the role to new blood,” Lau said, but did not explain her decision.

She said she had stayed on after the demise of her husband the late Datuk Robert Lau, the then deputy minister of transport because she had an unfinished task to do in the party.

“Many members are concerned with the well-being of the party, and they have been working hard. I stayed on with them to finish the task.”

In the gathering on Monday at a local restaurant, Lau became emotional when she related the political journey of SUPP Sibu Town Service Centre which was started by her late husband more than two decades ago.

She said many leaders in the central region had worked with him (Lau) and all have matured together in their political struggle.
