SONGKHLA, THAILAND: Thailand’s flood situation continues to receive the sympathy of Malaysians, as a second humanitarian aid mission bearing two containers of food and drinks arrived here on Friday evening.

The aid contributed by non-governmental organisations was made possible via the Prime Minister’s Office, with help from the office of Thai Prime Minister Yingluck Sinawatra and the Malaysian Embassy in Bangkok.

The mission coordinator, the prime minister’s Special Functions Officer Datuk Latt Shariman Abdullah handed over RM26,000 in aid to Southern Thailand Sheikhul Islam Information Centre director Halim Latif at 6pm.

Alor Setar MCA secretary and Crisis Relief Squad MCA (CRSM) adviser Loh Gim Hooi and Kerian Voluntary Security Forces (PKSK) treasurer Khaw Chee Peng were present at the event held at the Songkhla Central Mosque.

The contributions collected by the CRSM in Alor Setar comprised 1,600 cartons of mineral water and 600 boxes of instant noodles worth RM16,000, while the PKSK donated 250 boxes of biscuit valued at RM10,000. — Bernama

Latt Shariman told Malaysian reporters who took part in the aid mission that other non-governmental organisations had gathered more aid for flood victims, which would be sent to Bangkok in stages.

Three more containers with mineral water and food would be sent today to the Thai Army’s Fourth Division here before they were handed over to the government, he said.

“I am grateful we received positive feedback for the Thailand Flood Aid mission since Prime Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Najib Tun Abdul Razak asked NGOs to play a part.

We collected a lot of contributions,” said Latt Shariman who is also Kuala Kedah Umno division chief.

He also urged those who wanted to get involved or make a contribution to contact the nearest CRSM, Malaysian Red Crescent or St Johns Ambulance.

Meanwhile, Halim expressed gratitude on behalf of the Thai Government and the people to Malaysians for demonstrating neighbourly spirit, in view of the flood-stricken situation. — Bernama
