MIRI: Villagers in low-lying areas in Bekenu have been reminded to prepare for the possibility of flash floods due to the rainy season.

Bekenu assemblywoman Rosey Yunus said the current unpredictable weather conditions were particularly worrying.

“We are reminding villagers living in coastal areas and by riverbanks to be alert for any sign of the water level rising,” she said when contacted yesterday.

Rosey said villagers affected by floods in recent years have learnt to prepare to move their belongings to higher ground.

She advised those affected by flooding to immediately contact the nearest district office.

“If floods occur in your areas, immediately report the situation to district office to ensure the authorities concerned can evacuate (you) immediately,” she said.

She said parents must also ensure their children do not play in flood waters to  avoid any untoward incidents.

The landas season usually lasts from November to February.
