Cuepacs: Proposal a political ploy of DAP

KUCHING: DAP’s intention to slash half the number of civil servants if they were in power continues to receive public backlash.

Congress of Unions Employees in the Public and Civil Service (Cuepacs) yesterday joined the band-wagon after politicians such as Deputy Speaker of Parliament Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar and Deputy Minister Science, Technology and Innovation Datuk Fadillah Yusof have expressed negative view about the idea.

Cuepacs (Sarawak branch) secretary Ahmad Malie said the DAP proposal would only impede the country’s development as a whole, and would have an adverse effect on education.

When contacted yesterday, Ahmad said Cuepacs totally disagreed with the proposal, saying that it was only a political ploy of the party with the hope to rule the country.

He said the proposal was not rational and would only create problems for the country.

DAP secretary Tony Pua was reported to have said that the first step the opposition would take (when in power) in reducing the national expenditure was to reduce the number of civil servants.

Ahmad, who is also Sarawak Bumiputera Teachers Union (SBTU) president, singled out education as one of areas that would be badly affected by the DAP’s proposal if it were to materialise.

“Education is the biggest sector in the civil service and if the number of teachers is to be reduced, it will have an adverse effect on our school-going children,” Ahmad explained.

He said the rising number of students each year would require more teachers, and not to reduce them.
