SIBU: The overall crime index in the state is well below the national average of Key Performance Index (KPI).

This was revealed by State Police Commissioner Datuk Mortadza Nazarene at a press conference after he officiated at the opening of Sibu Central Police Station in Kampung Nyabor Road here yesterday.

He added that Kuching, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri were among the crime hotspots under the National Key Results Area (NKRA).

“This is so because there are blocks of development taking place in the areas.

“There are also multi-million dollar industries with Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE) projects,” he said.

On the crime index for Sibu, he said the current rate was down by 17.8 per cent compared to last year’s figure.

“Sibu is one of the areas where the National Blue Ocean Strategy is being implemented whereby the presence of police is increased through joint patrols with Rela and Civil Defence Department personnel.
