SARIKEI: Adequate and an efficient system of water supply are the most critical requirement to ensure successful rescue operations during fire emergency cases.

Tanjung Manis MP Datuk Norah Tun Abdul Rahman stated this when officiating at the closing ceremony of the Sarikei District Neighbourhood Committees and Fire Safety Clubs’ fire prevention campaign here yesterday.

As such, she felt that there was a dire need to ensure water supply was in place and accessible at all times in all residential areas.

“We need to have an efficient water supply system not only to meet our consumption and carry out our daily chores, but more importantly to ensure the safety of our lives and properties in case of fire breakouts,” she stressed.

She suggested that all residential areas, especially villages and longhouses in the towns’ outskirts, put up water storage system as part of their contingency plan in the eventuality of fire.

Tanks could be used for storage, she suggested, adding, she believed the elected representatives were prepared to help them purchase the items through the allocation of minor rural project (MRP) fund.

In addition, she urged the Fire and Rescue Services Department to educate rural folks on fire prevention and safety by carrying out regular fire drills and talks.

Over 100 members of 10  Neighbourhood Committees and six Fire Safety clubs in the district attended the one-day course held at the Unity Activity Centre Hall here yesterday.

Apart from talks and exhibitions, several competitions such as in extinguishing fires, wearing fire-fighting gear, colouring and quiz were held during the campaign.

Also  present were Sibu Zone fire chief Mutalib Rashid, District fire chief Ranger Moos and Deputy District fire chief Haron Jenai.
